.: Summer Book Club Kick-off :.

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s look on Treasure Island.”
-Walt Disney

Wouldn’t it be nice to be rewarded for something you love to do? By being a part of the summer book club you’re reading and getting rewarded in the end of the summer for the amount of reading you’ve done. On July 22 the summer book club will have its anual kick-off with a picnic including hotdogs and popcorn and much more. What better way to spend your summer than wraped up in a good book? You can also come see what the Teen Tech group has been hard at work making: the sea serpant for the 25th anniversary of the Summer Book Club. This sea serpent will be inside the library in the children section. This thing is HUGE. The Teen Tech. group has been busy from covering the wooden and cardboard structure with paper plates to give it a scale-like appearance to covering those “scales” with paper mache. It was indeed hard work but as of today, Thursday June 18th, the group got to see our hardwork paid off. Today, the sea serpent was painted many colors such as slate blue, green, and yellow to give it a mythical “serpenty” look.

We have also been busy with the upcoming teen LAN party which is basicly a gaming party. Computers are linked together and teams compete to dominate the game Nexuiz for the prize of bragging rights and a pack of peeps :) . This party will be on the 26th at the library. For furthur information check the main “teensacl” page. But I won’t be able to attend the LAN party considering my sisters graduation party will be on the same day. Then on the 27th I will be leaving for Wisconsin for most of the summer so I won’t be able to participate in many of the activities the library may be having after that date.

.: The Blindside :.

So, when not many showed up for the Bourne Series, we figured we would try again. We bought the new movie, “The Blindside”, and showed it at the library on Saturday, April 17th at a later time than the last movies. This time 19 people showed up instead of the former 9 people that had showed up last time. To top it off, we had tons of easter candy that had been donated.

It was a great movie and a great time :)

“Everything I Find Out, I Want To Forget”

- Jason Bourne of Bourne Identity

Based on the novel by Robert Ludlum, Bourne Identity with Matt Damon as Jason Bourne and Julia Stiles as Nicky Parsons was the first movie on our list March 13th. Next, was Bourne Supremacy, and then the final movie of the trilogy, Bourne Ultimatum. The movies started at 10 but I arrived early to help set up and pop some popcorn. There were only 9 kids there, but the movies were fun. Throughout the movies there was a bunch of popcorn as well as pop and towards noon we had lunch which consisted of hotdogs, chips, and salsa. Then later we had sundaes where we could put on the toppings of our choice. I had to leave early, after the second movie, because on that day we were having a birthday party for my younger cousin. I definitely think that we should have only had two movies though because after the first and halfway through the second I started to get tired of sitting there. I also thought it was too early considering I don’t normally get up until noon on weekends. I didn’t really like the Bourne Trilogy. I guess they aren’t my kind of movies; however, I can’t wait til the next movie marathon when it’s all sports movies.

Individually We Are One Drop, Together We Are An Ocean

-Ryunosuke Satoro

In any of my posts did I happen to mention that we were making a tutorial for the Alpena Library Staff on how to use Facebook? Well, we finished it… but we happened to finish right before Facebook decided to change the entire layout. Of course we can’t teach everyone how to use old Facebook when it has just been updated right? So, now we’re creating a whole new tutorial. One that will show everyone how to use the new and improved version of Facebook. What a bother. But in the end atleast there is four of use to tackle and take down all this work.

.: The Teen Valentines Dance ♥ :.

“After six hours of school I’ve had enough for the day
I hit the radio dial and turn it up all the way”

-Dance, Dance, Dance by: The Beach Boys

The teen dance was last Friday,  February 12, from 6-8. At first, when I told my friends about a dance at the library all they could say is, “at the library.. I don’t think so”. But one my my friends ended up going and she said she had a lot of fun. I even asked her at the dance  if the library was to have another, or a movie night, if she would come and she said definitely. But I think, like the school dances, the library dances should start later and end later because teens do tend to want to stay up at night :].

We had a great turn out for expecting around 20 people to show up at the dance and ending up with around 30. There was great food such as cookies, nachos, and pizza bites; However no one really danced but we did play twister, wii and I guess everyone played musical chairs although I ended up having to leave early, so they must have played after I left. Next time, I’m going to be sure to stay the whole time. It really was a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to the next dance as well as the first movie night which will be March 13th.

A Few Teens Attending The Dance

This Friday from 6-8 is the Teen Valentines Day Dance. This isn’t the kind of dance that you dress up for. It’s an all teen thing where kids can go considering there isn’t a whole lot to do in this town the library is giving teens something FREE to do. Not to mention the free food and music as well as wii playing. The whole crew (Teen Tech group) is going to be there. We’re hoping for a good turn out. I’ll keep it posted. :)

“A public library is the most enduring of memorials, the trustiest monument for the preservation of an event or a name or an affection; for it, and it only, is respected by wars and revolutions, and survives them” - Mark Twain

Growing up I have always loved reading books. By reading, reality ceases to exist as you’re absorbed into a realistic or unimaginable situation. You can travel all over the world without leaving your house just by picking up a book. Maybe my love of reading is what led me to this job at the library’ However, the library isn’t just known for books anymore; with the help of the Teen Tech group we’re hoping to change the library into a fun place for teens that contains both books and technology. As years pass, the world is advancing and we’re going to help keep the George N. Fletcher Alpena County Library up to date. As of now we just finished creating a video to introduce the staff to everyone and we’re uploading it onto the Alpena Library website. Check it out sometime? It’s pretty great. I’ll try to fill everyone in on anything new comes up.
